The cone penetrometer technique and the bevameter technique are widely used in the measurement of the mechanical properties of terrain for the study of vehicle mobility in the field. The selection of the technique for measuring terrain properties is closely related to the method of approach chosen for the study of vehicle–terrain interaction—the cone penetrometer technique is usually employed to identify terrain conditions for the study of vehicle mobility using empirical relations and the bevameter technique is primarily used in methods intended for detailed parametric analyses of vehicle performance and design. With the rapid progress in electronics and computer technology, a variety of cone penetrometers using electrical (or electronic) sensors for monitoring the force, and penetration depth and computer technology for storing and processing data have been developed. The bevameter technique provides the closest simulation of vehicle loading conditions among the various measuring techniques presently in use. Accordingly, the terrain data obtained by the bevameter are used as input for a detailed examination of vehicle–terrain interaction. In a bevameter developed by the Petawawa National Forest Institute (PNFI) of Canada, the devices for pressure–sinkage and shear tests have been integrated into a single mechanism capable of performing both test functions.
